The Evolution of Video Editing: Navigating Focus and Innovation

Throughout the past seven weeks, I have been on quite a journey since the start of my first-ever class in my Interactive Media and Communications (ICM) Master’s Program at Quinnipiac University. Specifically, I have been honing my focus because of Stolen Focus, a book we have been reading throughout the course that speaks to the harmful effects that are plaguing our focus in this modern era.

For our final project in ICM 501, the goal was to create a white paper based on all of our findings throughout the course and focus on a specific industry. For my paper, I decided to write about a passion of mine that has carried me throughout my early 20s: video editing.

Video editing is an extremely crucial job in the media right now. Most of the information that is consumed is through a video. Each week, the average internet user spends 6 hours to 48 minutes consuming videos, and in 2021, this figure is expected to increase by 35% due to device usage and TikTok records its users spending over 1.5 hours watching videos on TikTok every day. In my white paper, I explore the intricacies of the craft and how we are in a battle between new and upcoming tools developed through AI. I also investigate and compare the way in which videos have been edited in the past versus the way they are edited now to fit the new short-form format of platforms such as TikTok. I invite you to read through my findings and send me and comment down below with your thoughts!
